December 1st 2012 was the 57th anniversary of the arrest of Rosa Parks. 57 years ago Rosa refused to move from her seat to the back of the bus.

It was only 57 years ago that it was legal to tell someone just because of their skin color they had to give up their seat. Discrimination like this was widely accepted, it took one brave person to stand up and fight it.

President Obama visited the bus Rosa Parks was arrested in. It’s a powerful photo.

I am also happy to know that they are all ready for the next step in their education.  They are all deep thinkers, motivated students, caring empathic individuals who are enthusiastic about their next educational step.  I’m happy that they’re all ready for their secondary school lives!

It’s been a wonderful two years of teaching for me.  A great school and a beautiful bunch of students.

SRI LANKA IS MY COUNTRY. SOME PEOPLE CALL IT  THE PEARL OF THE INDIAN OCEAN BECAUSE IT IS AN ISLAND WHICH IS SURROUNDED BY THE INDIAN OCEAN.  SRI LANKA HAS A LONG HISTORY AND IT IS VERY BEAUTIFUL.  THERE ARE NINE PROVINCES AND TWENTY FOUR DISTRICTS.  INDIA IS THE NEAREST COUNTRY TO SRI LANKA.  THERE ARE SINHALESE, TAMILS, MUSLIMS AND BURGERS. THEY ARE VERY UNITED.  SRI LANKA IS FULL OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND THEY ADD BEAUTY TO MY COUNTRY.  OUR STAPLE FOOD IS RICE.  OUR ECONOMY DEPENDS ON AGRICULTURE AND TRADE.  TEA, RUBBER, COCONUT AND CINNAMON ARE OUR MAIN EXPORT ITEMS.  BUDDHISM IS THE MAIN RELIGION IN SRI LANKA.  SRI LANKA IS DEVELOPING DAY BY DAY.  SRI LANKANS ARE VERY HOSPITABLE.  SRI LANKA HAS A VERY GOOD CLIMATE SO MANY FOREIGNERS LIKE TO LIVE IN SRI LANKA.  THE PRESIDENT OF SRI LANKA IS MAHINDA RAJAPAKSHA AND HE ALWAYS TRIES TO KEEP OUR COUNTRY CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL.  SRI JAYAWARDANAPURA KOTTE IS THE CAPITAL OF SRI LANKA.  I THINK IAM LUCKY TO HAVE A COUNTRY LIKE THIS.  WHAT A GOOD AND BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY IT IS!

]]> http://6cathie.com/2011/10/22/weve-hit-5000-visits-to-our-blog/feed/ 6 We’re back for a BIG term 4!!! http://6cathie.com/2011/10/20/were-back-for-a-big-term-4/ http://6cathie.com/2011/10/20/were-back-for-a-big-term-4/#comments Thu, 20 Oct 2011 07:28:36 +0000 5cathie http://6cathie.com/?p=1107 Grade 6Cathie are back with a bang!  We have already started with Division in maths, and we are doing some beautiful work.  We have a new ‘Year 7′ style maths book that is helping us practice getting ready for high school work – no more grid books this term!  We are setting our work out on lined paper; ruling our pages down the middle in red and numbering all questions and correcting and re-trying if our work is incorrect.  We also have a glossary page at the back of our new books to keep our notes in, mathematical vocabulary we need to remember and recall quickly and other really important information.  We’re already really good at this!!

We are also onto our next digital project.  Alice was awesome and it prepared us for using digital media again, and this time we’re trying something different.  Check out this YouTube link – it was the start of our motivation to create again using digital literacies!  Thanks to Bay for passing this idea onto us too :)   We are busy creating text, taking photos and videos, searching the internet in order to put together our own thought provoking stories, and WOW, there are already some wonderful things happening and we’ve really only just started!

We will post our videos here when we’re done … in the meantime, watch the Tropfest video linked above and check out our current digital media/writing motivation :)
